Where is the life that late I led?

 Went to see Wicked at the Kennedy Center last night.  Kinda hated it.  No really.  I liked the song Popular and the costumes.  I read a review that said it was a musical for people who didn't watch musicals.  I guess.  All I know it that the book (not the novel, which to be honest I never finished) was...full of plot holes and the lyrics were...trite and incomprehensible for most of it.  I liked the woman who played Elphaba more when she was just acting than singing (but that's likely because I didn't like many of the songs), and the guy playing Freyio was...terrible.  The woman playing Glinda did a great job being a Kristin Chenowith double.  My favorite was the woman playing Madame Morrible--great acting and singing from her, but that might be because I could actually hear her.  I did love the costumes.  

You know what would have improved it?  If it were a lesbian love story between Glinda and Elphaba.

At the end, there were several people crying (really????) and the cast got a standing O.  I just...bleh.  Did. Not. Like.

I think I need a good musical to clear my brain now.  Some of my favorites are: Kiss me Kate, The Book of Mormon, Sweeny Todd, Avenue Q, Into the Woods, or Fiddler on the Roof .

What musical do you suggest??

I rather loathed that book, as well - i remember a friend loaning it to me and i was just totally 'uck' at it. Can't imagine a musical of it.

As for awesome musicals....Singin' in the Rain and Yankee Doodle Dandy! :)

Yeah, from what I have cobbled together it's NOTHING like the novel, I mean, if you squint... . Which...if it were closer to the novel, it would have been slightly better, but only slightly.

OH Singin' in the Rain! I love the "make 'em laugh" scene, that man is just so AMAZING, and Gene Kelly = UNF.

I don't think I've ever seen Yankee Doodle Dandy, thanks for the suggestion! *makes a note*

I love that whole movie so much, so much fun!

And YDD is a favorite of mine not only for awesome dance and song, but it's starring *James Cagney*, whom i adore. :)

OH MY GOD. I THINK I LOVE YOU. I spent my entire 5/6 years in Broadway fandom UTTERLY BAMBOOZLED at how EVERYONE loved that SHITTY, SHITTY MUSICAL. It's based on a terrible book, the music is GRATING, the characters are flat stereotypes--it does nothing new or interesting in any way. I've heard good things about the sets and costumes, but there is no way the show is visually impressive enough to have made me not want to DIE sitting through three hours of that torture.

Though I agree it could have been moderately saved by them being lesbians. Not enough to fix how bad it is, but it would've been a much less gag-inducing love story, at least.

You know what would have improved it? If it were a lesbian love story between Glinda and Elphaba. Maybe it's my slash goggles, but I always imagine that it is, haha! I don't know how else to explain "For Good." I love all of your favorite musicals, too!

I guess I do view it as a lesbian love story. For the most part, I loathe musicals. I saw Wicked several years ago now and it was okay. I enjoyed it more than most musicals, so I guess I fall into that category of it being for people who don't like musicals. But I wouldn't say I loved it or that it was fabulous and amazing or anything. It was fine. It didn't make me want to get up and leave after the first 5 minutes. And I chose to view it as a lesbian love story, so I just put myself in that mindset.

If you're up for movie musicals, the one that I always watch when it's on TV and love to itty bitty pieces would be Victor, Victoria. Genderbending and no random bursting out into song (which is probably what I hate most about musicals).

I've never read the book or seen the musical, though I do have a friend for whom it is a coming out touchstone.

I love musicals, and had to laugh to see Into the Woods. I saw it this past year and it left me cold. O.o
